Bridge is Now Open

Hey Stewart’s RV Friends…
Great News…The new “Sam White Lane” bridge is now OPEN!!
This is the bridge that is next to us, it runs East and West, and was the biggest “spanning bridge” move in Utah!  It is really quite nice.  It has been open for a few days, and many drivers are already enjoying the access over the bridge.  Come drive over it and come visit us when you do!
Happy “Bridge” Driving!!

How is your Roof?

How’s your Roof?
Over the past fourteen years I have been in the RV service industry, roof maintenance has been the most neglected and by far the most costly problem we repair in our shop.

The main reason is roof leaks generally don’t start leaking inside for quite a while, it takes time to get through the framing and insulation before it gets into the ceiling, walls, and the floor. By the time most leaks are noticed, major damage may already be done!

The rubber roof maker “DICOR” warranties their material for ten years, yet we have never had one instance where the material has failed. What is not read or thought about is that neither they, nor any RV manufacturer cover seams, vents, air conditioners, and so on from leaking. If you buy a new RV from any company or any dealership, sealants are considered “owner maintenance”.

Think of it this way, as the RV is driven down the road, it flexes and moves. When this happens, seam sealant can come undone or crack and eventually will leak. No one has control over this, and that is why they consider it the owner’s responsibility.

The rubber roofing is very thin, and although it is strong, tree branches can tear through it. If you ever think you may have got close to a tree, have the roof checked for damage.

Over the past two years, we at Stewart’s RV have implemented a “free roof inspection” with all of our Winterize and De-winterize packages. We feel so strongly about this, that we take the time to make sure your RV’s roof is sealed and not torn at no cost to you. If repairs are needed, we give our customers an estimate and let them decide what to do.

Sealant: what should be used? There are a few different brands of rubber roof sealant, but the one we use and recommend is the DICOR brand. We get a lot of RV’s in that have been patched with silicone and even tar- DON’T use these products, they will not work. Make sure you use one that is intended for rubber roofing, come in and we can show you.

Like other rubber products, the roof material dries out after exposure to the weather and the sun. We carry rubber roof conditioner in our store that we recommend applying once a year. It is a cleaner/conditioner that will extend the life of your roof. We can also perform this service in our shop.

Give us a call or e-mail your questions to us at service@stewsrv.com , we will do our best to help you out.

Generators

GENERATOR’S

We probably all have had a time where we needed a generator, especially if you dry camp very often. There are many types of generators on the market, and they range in price from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. This article will try to describe the differences between them.

  1. The number one thing to look at is Voltage Regulation. With all the electronics in today’s RV’S, they are very sensitive to improper voltage. Fridges, Air Conditioners, Microwaves, Stereo’s, TV’s, and Power Converters are some of the appliances that get affected by improper voltage, and they are also very costly to replace.

“Inverter” style generators have the best voltage regulation due to a truer sine wave, the generator produces 12 volt power, and the inverter turns it into 120 volt power. This is very “clean” power and the generator is much more efficient than conventional generators. They are also very, very quiet!

“Conventional” generators or “industrial” generators are very loud, most have poor voltage regulation, and are mostly meant for contractors or emergency backup. Most times you see people running 100 plus feet of extension cord out to the generator so they can hear their television!! Experience has proven to us that when people bring in their RV’s with several power problems, they were using one of these styles of generators.

  1. The second thing to consider is size. Consider all the things you will want to run from the generator, and with a little use of ohms law, you can determine the size of generator you will need. The appliance that uses the most power is the Air Conditioner (will require a minimum of 3600 watts). The microwave and the hair dryer will require 1200 to 1500 watts, and the other appliances use much less.

Some brands of generators, like the Yamaha brand we carry, offer a pairing cable so two 2000 watt generators can be hooked together to produce 4000 watts. This is nice for several reasons: they are lighter and easier to store than a 4000 watt generator, and if you are not running the air conditioner, you can use just one of them to conserve on fuel.

  1. The third thing to consider is price. When you are shopping for a generator, try not to use the best price as your determining factor. This is one of your purchases that the term “you get what you pay for” rings true! Look at more important factors like: warranty, brand reliability, service center locations (we are a Yamaha selling dealer and service center).

Feel free to come in and talk to us about your generator needs anytime, thanks.

A Family That Plays Together, Stays Together

A new study has confirmed an old adage: A family that plays together stays together. Researchers from Concordia University and Wilfrid Laurier University examined the ways grandparents can maintain close ties with their adult grandchildren. True to the old maxim, recreation emerged as the glue sealing intergenerational bonds.

“Leisure is vital in the formation of bonds that last from generation to generation,” says lead author Shannon Hebblethwaite, a professor in Concordia University’s Department of Applied Human Sciences. “Shared leisure time allows grandchildren and their grandparents to establish common interests that, in turn, enable them to develop strong intergenerational relationships.”

New Product- Tongue Jack Foot

We would like to introduce you to another new great camping product.  Fastway trailer products (www.fastwaytrailer.com)  have come out with a flip jack foot.  It attaches permanently to the bottom of your jack’s inner tube.  As you extend your jack, the Flip Foot extends down and locks into place.  When you raise your jack, the Flip Foot automatically tucks up under the frame and out of the way.  With the Fastway Flip Foot automatic jack foot, you can say goodbye to wood blocks.  Nothing extra for you to store, no pins to pull or to insert.  This jack foot is designed to fit most 2 1/4 tongue jacks with the 2′ dimension inner tube.  It is tough enough to hold up to 1,400 lbs of tongue weight.  Our service department is installing the Flip Foot free, for this summer season.  Come in and see us.  Our store is open Mon-Fri 9-6 and Saturday from 9-4.  Have a great camping season!

We are so lucky to live in this great state of Utah…there are incredible camping spots to explore. At Stewart’s RV we are all getting excited to get out camping!!

Tips on Getting your Trailer ready for the Season.

Its finally here: time to get our RV’S and Trailers out of storage and ready for the season!! Here are some tips to get started on the right foot:
1. Check over the exterior of your RV for broken or missing parts (vent lids, lights, trim…)
2. Lube the jacks and stabilizers, as well as the door locks.
3. Reconnect your batteries and plug in  your RV to get the batteries charged up and ready to use.
4. Air up the tires and check for cracks or tread problems. Also look over the valve stems on the wheels.
5. Check the LP gas system and make sure the hose connections to the tanks are tight    (smell for gas) * We suggest getting the LP System tested on a regular basis for proper gas pressure and for leaks*
6. Get the water system dewinterized and ready for use. Remember the filter and the bypasses.
7. Have the wheel bearings inspected and the brakes checked every three to five thousand miles or per the manufacturers suggestions.
We offer a Dewinterize service that includes: flushing the fresh water system, reconnecting the filter, opening the bypasses and installing the drains. We also inspect the roof and air up the tires. The cost is $44.95. Other services are always available also.
Please call our service department at 801-492-1428 or e-mail us at: service@stewsrv.com to make an appointment.
